Product Description

We are proud to announce our partnership with the most exquisite underground card master ever. For the first time in his career of over 35 years, Armando Lucero has decided to release the first level of his highly guarded workshop to the public. With a focus on psychology and magical theory, Armando shares his private thoughts and concepts as they apply to sleight of hand and magic with playing cards.

The concepts, however, can be applied to any kind of magic.  Paper Cuts is the culmination of what Armando offers to Level 1 students and beyond of the art. Paper Cuts is a series of different routines that Armando has specifically constructed to teach lessons about the inner thinking behind magic and composing magical performance pieces.

Divided into 12 different routines, including a few variations and extra concepts, Armando shares not only performance pieces that are ready for a professional show but also thoughts and ideas on how to improve all of your magic.

FAQ

What is Paper Cuts? The Paper Cuts video series is not the Workshop, which is an online or in-person comprehensive study of magic & science beyond the scope of this exordium. However, it is a peek at Armando’s way of composing to serve as a primer before the Workshop; like a glance through a window into a cabin of a large ship upon the ocean. But a notable glance nonetheless.

It is an exhibition of ubiquitous classical material purposely tailored for a modern discerning audience. Being accessible as historical published works this is, therefore, an opportunity to learn within the safety of what is familiar.

What kind of material is taught on this project? Paper Cuts, as the name suggests is composed of entirely card magic. Each DVD features a series of routines designed for real world work and performance. As well, each effect has an accompanying explanation and discussion. In the discussions, the effects are explained from a technical, theatrical, and philosophical point of view. There is also great care taken with each routine to teach an important lesson about performance, and how to apply those techniques and lessons to other routines in your show.

What is the Workshop Deck?
The Workshop Deck is a custom designed deck of cards made specifically for Armando Lucero. Everything from the type of paper stock, to the feel, finish, and cut of each card has been hand crafted to Armando’s Specifications. Papercutspapercuts2

Why are the DVDs being released one per month?
To be consistent with Armando’s philosophy of teaching, the material is being given one piece at a time. The material on these DVDs is very complex, and rich in philosophy, technique, sleight of hand, choreography, and presentation. Every piece invites a discussion with your audience and stands to hold more power than more typical card effects and therefore deserve more time and energy.

How is Paper Cuts related to the Coin Menagerie and Pasteboard Devices Workshops that Armando Lucero offers Privately?
Paper Cuts is a completely different workshop and shares no effects or techniques in common with these other private workshops. The philosophy, theatrical technique, and advice is, however, consistent with all workshops that Armando teaches including Paper Cuts.

Quotes:
“Armando never does tricks, he washes away from people’s soul the dust of everyday life, with real magic, decades of passion and emotional pieces of art.” – Yif

“This work exceeds any expectations. Armando, is synonymous of work, perseverance and good taste. But all above all, passion! This work is a true gift for Magic.” – Dani Daortiz

“Armando Lucero is putting something out.  That sentence is reason enough to get this. I met Armando years ago and with some coins, a deck of cards, and a close up mat at a breakfast table- he changed the way I look at magic.  Every breath, every sound, every micro movement that he does is so tediously thought out and deliberate. His hands and mind were built for miracles.” – Dan White

“Armando  Lucero, in addition to personally being my favorite magician, is beyond question the foremost sleight of hand performer and magical thinker in our profession. In 80 years, he is the only magician I have ever seen whose effects look like real magic.” -Johnny Thompson.

“A true master, my first teacher, and now you have the opportunity to let him guide you, too… don’t miss out on that opportunity.” -Paul Vigil

VERY well put together. I like how all the basic moves are taught in a routine rather than individually like usual card magic DVDs. I bought that Sheridan course and man, his personality was very dry and he seemed like he didn’t want to be there. Armando however, showed enthusiasm in his teachings and I respect that. A lot of magicians nowadays don’t want to teach their craft, unless they are regarded as ‘first’ on YouTube or whatever now. But yeah, I loved it. I have to watch it again through and practice because I just watched it the first Time to see his teaching technique.

I was going to wait for the release of the physical DVD’s of this project, but ended up going with the digital downloads right before the end of the option to purchase the season pass. I’m slowly working my way through the first disc, and here are my impressions:

First of all, the quality of the actual video is excellent. There are four effects here, and they are all great. The teaching is extremely well done, and Sansminds decided to have someone sit in while Armando teaches, and learn along with you. I’ve always liked this format, since the person learning quite often has the same questions I would have if I were taking the lesson in person. Each effect is complete with a wonderfully written script, and a detailed analysis of not only what you need to do to accomplish the effect, but also why you need to do it. In other words, the psychology and choreography behind why the effects work, and how to use all of this to your advantage. For anyone who knows Armando or is familiar with his work, this shouldn’t be a surprise.

My two favorites so far from this release are Taco and The Ascension. I think one of the best tricks in card magic is Armando’s Empanada, and Taco is basically another version of this effect that can be performed by regular human beings (with enough practice). Empanada itself is only covered in private lessons with Armando, which I haven’t yet been able to attend, so I was quite excited to see this version on here. For me personally, this one effect was worth the entire price of the downloads. Basically, any card named by the spectator unexpectedly appears between two cards that have been set aside before the effect begins. This effect, as with all the others on the DVD, includes moves that you can use with many other effects. I wouldn’t say that Taco is “easy” to do, but it is well within the grasp of any competent magician who is willing to put in the work. Once it’s ready, this is something I will performing for the rest of my career.

The other effect that I will tell you a little bit about is The Ascension. Out of the four, this was the one I expected to be the least interested in, since I’ve always really hated the Ambitious Card plot. After watching this version, however, I not only enjoyed the performance of this plot for the first time, but I was also inspired to learn it. The script that Armando includes helps a lot, as it gives a meaning to the effect which really resonates with me. Beyond that, the moves that he includes in this routine are some that I have never seen before, that I feel elevate the piece to an entirely new level. For the average magician, this one may be a little difficult to learn. It certainly is for me, but I’m positive it’s going to be worth the effort. I don’t perform a whole lot of card magic, so it might be a little easier for you if you do. Even if you already do an Ambitious Card, there are bits and pieces here you can add to any routine to make it better and more interesting.

I should also mention that I particularly enjoyed the end of the video where Armando talks about performing magic for a camera. In this discussion, he covers a lot of different things, including the difference between practicing using a mirror, and practicing using a video camera. I really hope there are segments like this at the end of each of the upcoming downloads. I guess we will see.

In conclusion, for me at least, this is the best video on card magic that I have ever bought. I would give this first part of the release a solid 10/10. This might not be the same for everyone, since the information that’s on here is very different than your typical magic DVD. If you are looking for quick tricks to do while walking around at a party, this probably isn’t what you are looking for. In order to perform this stuff well, you are going to need to take the time to perfect it, work on a script (either the ones that are provided, or one of your own) and polish everything. You won’t be able to put this stuff into your show tomorrow, and for me, that’s ok. If you aren’t familiar with Armando’s work, think Ricky Jay level stuff. You really can’t compare the two in a performance aspect, since it’s sort of like apples and oranges, but my point is that obviously pieces like this are not learned overnight. This is well choreographed, close-up theatre that happens to use playing cards.

A lot of people like to toss around the term “Master Class” these days, but that’s really what this is. For the perceptive student, the information here will not only help you make these tricks great, but will also elevate other areas of your magical performance. I’m primarily a stage magician, there is no doubt that the deeper lessons can be applied there as well. For anybody that wishes that they could study with a real master like Armando in person, this really is the next best thing.

I’m deeply conflicted in writing this review. On the one hand I wish to keep Armando’s magic out of the spotlight, a treasure only a select few will be able to cherish. On the other hand it is my hope that Armando will keep releasing quality material like these DVD’s.

I first read about Armando’s magic in 2004, when he was featured on the cover of Magic magazine. I then fell badly ill and one of the things that kept me going was the thought of recovering and seeing him live in Stockholm during FISM. All that came true and I was lucky enough to witness his coin menagerie, empenada and his lecture. Ever since then I have idolised the man. His magic is so pure, so elegant and so magical.

I’m not going to spend much time reviewing the effects taught within these DVD’s, they are simply fantastic. His ambitious card plot is tremendous, Taco is terrific and his work on the muck was very interesting (the only other magician I have ever seen using card mucking for magic was Tim Star who coincidentally demoed his mucking work at FISM in Stockholm). I just want to say that I haven’t had this much fun studying magic for many years and I have learned so much from listening to Armando. Everything is so meticulous and thought out. He is a true genius.

For the longest time I have dreamt of attending his workshops but I will have to wait for a long time before I am able to drop that kind of money on magic. Until then I will devour this set till I know it all by heart and thankfully it will take me a long time to learn all the lessons and practice all the moves to perfection.

If you are pondering whether you should splurge the cash on this set I have only one piece of advice for you: Do yourself a favour and buy this set and study it carefully!

I first heard about Armando Lucero when he was featured on the cover of Magic magazine. I later fell badly ill and one of the things that kept me going was to recover and go to FISM in Stockholm to see him perform live. Armando Lucero didn’t disappoint! His magic looks and feels “real”. He is without a doubt my favourite magician so you can imagine my delight when I heard he was realising this set. I immediately purchased a season pass and have now seen all the DVD’s.

I haven’t had this much fun practising and studying magic for a long time. Everything is meticulously thought out and explained clearly. The effects are fantastic, I especially like Taco, his three card monte and his version of the ambitious card. I have also enjoyed his work on the muck (coincidentally the only other magician I have seen use a card muck for magic was Tim Star during FISM 2006).

I hope that I can one day attend his workshops but till then this set will have to do. Do yourself a favour and buy it now and study it carefully. I know I will be working on this stuff for years to come and I absolutely love it! Without a doubt the best magic purchase I have ever made.

These DVDs will teach you a lot.
A lot of magicians put out BOLD concepts and claim that with the correct misdirection you’ll get away with anything. Armando Lucero is different. Despite using misdirection, he also constructs the methods carefully and concisely so that even the smartest, sharpest spectator would be fooled. Great minds think alike and Armando has a lot in common with Juan Tamariz, in their use of the ‘false solution’ technique. With these routines you lead your spectator down different paths of solution and eventually, they find none.
I shared one of Armando Lucero’s performance videos with one of my friends, the smartest guy I’ve ever seen, and he was BAFFLED by the performance, and looked up to me in shock.
The routines Armando taught are simply brilliant, and will shock your audience all the time. However, practice is needed, both for the misdirection and the technique.
I specifically recommend these few routines in the DVDs: Ascension, Taco, Passing Through, Betwixt Me-ish, Monte and Poem, and Four Pockets. These routines vary in difficulty but similar in their ability to amaze.
Long story short, if you want great sleights and routines that ACTUALLY WORK you wanna buy this. Nobody should ever give a 3 star. That’s an insult.
